Lab activities enhance learning and
make it more enjoyable as well.

The traditional first semester science calculus course (M1171) is
extremely challenging for most students - mainly as a result of the
large volume of material to be covered. This is why we have for many
years provided a slower paced sequence (M1153/1253) that takes an extra
semester to complete the same material. Another approach is to keep it
down to one semester but provide more class time and more varied
activities for the course. You can think of Math 1173/1183 as a section
of M1171 with extra time for "lab" activities intended to enhance
students' understanding of the new concepts being introduced.
Math 1183 is a one-credit lab course that is taken along with an
appropriately modified version (M1173) of the main calculus course. The
pair of courses M1173 & 1183
(which must be taken together) earn a total of 4 transferable college
credits (rather than the usual 3) for a total of 6 class and lab hours
per week, and give students who would otherwise be directed to
M1153/1253 an opportunity to complete the material (if successful) in
just one semester. Students transferring to university can take Math
1173&1183 in lieu of Math 1171.
The opportunity for faster progress is not the only advantage of the lab oriented approach:
And if you've already completed Calculus I, you can always try the Lab-Based Approach for Calculus II
