Learning Tools and Technologies

The Ed Tech department at Langara provides expertise, support and guidance in a wide range of learning tools and technologies.

Core Technologies

Core technologies are those that Ed Tech administers and controls. Support for core technologies is a priority for us. This includes:

  • providing full support to faculty and instructional staff using these technologies
  • offering a comprehensive faculty and instructional staff development and troubleshooting service
  • collecting statistics regarding use
  • ensuring that their setup complies with legal requirements (i.e. FIPPA and PIPA) and institutional policies (i.e. retention, backup, risk management)

  • WordPress (blogging and content management)
  • Brightspace by D2L (Learning Management System)
  • Zoom (web conferencing and communication)
  • Kaltura (multimedia streaming platform)
  • Turnitin

Recognized Technologies

Recognized technologies are important for enhancing learning and teaching, but EdTech does not have full administration rights and/or full control over them.

Recognized Technologies include tools and services that are:

  • Subscription based
  • being piloted and are not fully available across the institution
  • may not be FIPPA and PIA compliant for student use

EdTech Recognized Technologies:

  • Screencast-o-Matic
  • Explain Everything
  • Pixton.com (comic creator)

Advised-on Technologies

EdTech faculty and staff have expertise in a number of apps, software and cloud tools which have the potential to enrich learning and teaching. However, we do not have administration rights or control over these tools. Therefore, support predominantly consists of advising on effective pedagogical practice in embedding them in learning and teaching activities.

Users must ensure that their use of ‘advised-on’ technologies complies with legal requirements (i.e. FIPPA, PIPA, data protection, copyright) and institutional policies. Please contact us if you have questions edtech@langara.ca
