Privacy issues with Adobe Digital Editions

It has recently been discovered that there are some potential privacy issues with Adobe Digital Editions, a free piece of software that is used to read many of our downloaded library ebooks. Adobe Digital Editions has been logging information about books used with the software and sending that information back to Adobe servers without any encryption, making it potentially available to anyone with the technical skill to intercept that data. As far as we know, this is only a concern with Adobe Digital Editions version 4.

Our library ebooks can always be read online, without any use of Adobe Digital Editions. Additionally, ebooks on our ebrary platform allow for downloads of single chapters in PDF format, which does not require use of Adobe Digital Editions to read. If you would like to download entire books for offline reading, this does require the use of Adobe Digital Editions due to digital rights management restrictions. This has unfortunately been the case for all libraries like Langara who provide ebook content.

If you are concerned about this privacy issue, you can remove Adobe Digital Editions from your devices. You can continue to use our ebook material online, or download previous versions of Adobe Digital Editions for offline reading, which do not demonstrate the same behaviour as version 4. Please contact your liaison librarian if you have any questions or concerns.
