According to a recent study, the price of college textbooks increased by an astounding 88% between 2006 and 2016. It’s no wonder that open educational resources (OER)—resources that can be freely used, shared, and adapted for teaching and learning—are often celebrated for keeping money in students’ pockets. And yet, the benefits of OER extend much farther than cost-savings alone.
In her talk Beyond OER: The Promises, Pitfalls, and Potential of Open Education, renowned open education researcher and advocate Robin DeRosa will explore how OER, open licenses, and digital technologies can be leveraged to empower learners, contribute to the knowledge commons, and reinvigorate the mission of colleges and universities.
This exciting conversation takes place on Tuesday, March 21st from 12:30-1:30 in the T building gallery (T240) and kicks off Open Education Week 2017 (March 27-April 2), a celebration of the open education movement. Robin currently serves as the Director of Plymouth State University’s Interdisciplinary Studies program, where she has developed an innovative curriculum that combines connected learning techniques with open pedagogical practices. She helps faculty, librarians, and technologists from a wide variety of post-secondary institutions explore ways to empower learners and increase public access to education and research.
