University of Maryland Mobile Learning Initiative
Resource Person: Chris Higgins, Director of the Office of Information Technology, University of Maryland
The University of Maryland launched a Mobility Initiative in 2008. They’ve created a website at http://mobility.umd.edu/
They have links to Press Releases, Presentations, Articles & Reports on their initiative, plus they’ve got a page of links to projects that individual faculty have taken on at http://mobility.umd.edu/faculty_engagement/index.html. Some of these projects are in the disciplines of Communications, Spanish, Kinetics, Journalism, French & Computing.
Augmented Reality Possibilities
I saw this gentleman present at the ACU Connected Summit in February this year and thought it could be very worthwhile to follow up with him. Not only were students experiencing art, but suggesting ways that the experience could be enhanced for others through use of augmented reality. Some very intriguing projects were the result of this approach.
GPS on iDevices
Do the iPhones, iPads & iPod Touches have GPS?
Yes – for those devices with a 3G (cellular) data plan, no for the iPod Touch & the iPads without the 3G ability. Here is an article that discusses whether the iDevice GPS is “authentic”.

Loop 2: What course concepts could you “deliver” to your students via a mobile device?
Imagine some concepts, key ideas, key processes, or small (but important) curriculum-course-material-learning-outcome “chunks” that could potentially be delivered to your students thru mobile devices. These could be mini-topics, brief explanations, reminder messsages, etc – that could help the students learn – either before they “go out to where the learning lives”, or for them to use in the midst of their interface with the “phenomenon-under-study”.
What would these be? You can imagine these concepts could be delivered via a short text message, audio, video, or other types of communication. At this point, think “I can imagine….” There’s no commitment, just mind play and “imagineering”.

Loop 3: How can students share what they have learned with you and with each other?
How can students share what they have learned with you and with each other?
- How can you arrange the learning environment so that students can share and so they can learn from each other?
- How can you set things up and also use the technology to get students to move each other toward the learning outcomes of the course?
- How could you set things up and also use the technology to create, encourage, and support: student authors; course collaborators; an assembly of knowledge; a horizontal (as opposed to hierarchical) dialogue
- A community of practice

Creating Movies with Mobile Devices
A great talk with some practical suggestions for making, editing and publishing movies using mobile devices like the iPod Touch. From the site description
“Tony presents a demonstration and examples of how to create excellent educational videos by using a variety of iOS apps to film, edit, enhance, and publish videos. Tony’s movie making tips and techniques are relevant to anyone who makes videos, no matter the software or how large the computer they use to edit and publish.” From the recent “Learning Without Frontiers” Learing & Technology Festival held in London.
