I came across this article in last week’s Georgia Straight. Welcome to the education chat room There are a number of examples of the use of technology in the classroom and how it might further engage instructors and students. I found the Glen Lowry’s comments regarding “digital natives” to be of interest as a number of my students commented on how intuitive technology is for the children growing up today. They didn’t seem to identify themselves as part of the digital native group.
Mobile Case Studies from ACU
Faculty in a variety of disciplines discuss their integration of mobile devices into their teaching and learning activities. In these two short interviews, faculty discuss the use of mobile devices in ways similar to clickers (personal response systems) for activities such as polling and quick quizzes.
Replacing Clickers with Mobile Devices
There are websites & apps available for mobile devices that can banish the need to purchase separate “clickers”.
Poll Everywhere, for example, is a webservice that can be set up to allow votes to be registered via text messaging or the web. For more information check out http://polleverywhere.com and if you’d like to test it out, go to http://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/LTExNTQ4MDEyOTc and text in your vote.
eClicker and eClicker Host are apps available for “i”Devices that also allow you to set up polls. Those without iDevices can cast votes via the web. For more information, visit the iTunes App Store, or the app website at http://www.eclicker.com/
