This session is an opportunity to start the conversation. Reconciliation is unknown territory for many, and there may be fears of being disrespectful. It is our desire to share with you some of the experiences we have had so far on this journey and perhaps propagate some ideas to bring into the classroom. Together, we will discuss first steps to navigate this road to Reconciliation. Don’t be afraid to ask for directions.

Jimmy Aitken is currently a student at Langara College and previously was the College’s Indigenous Student Engagement Officer.

Having Cowichan, Haida, and Scottish ancestry, Jimmy is eager to share his unique experience navigating between the Indigenous and Non-Indigenous worlds. Returning to school in 2015 after 25+ years to pursue higher education, he has discovered that this is where he can fulfill his passion and contribute to the Reconciliation movement.

Cody Hawver is the Head Instructor of Programs at UBC English Language Institute.

Cody has taught Applied Linguistics, foreign languages, and EAL in many contexts in several countries. He is passionate about language and culture and strongly supports Reconciliation with our Indigenous Peoples.
